Lawrence Kesteloot has updated his TRS80TOOL to v2.6.0. Release Notes:

• Better handling of double-sided disks.
• Assembler:
  • Full expression support: All the operators in C, with their same precedence.
  • Assembles about 10 times faster.
  • Allow nv and v for po and pe flags.
  • Various compatibility improvements with zmac.
  • Breaking change: No longer permit % as binary prefix. Instead of writing %1010, use 1010b or 0b1010.
• Disassembler: Add --upper flag.

A site visitor has a working Model 4 (or at least drive :0 does) for sale for $300 for local pickup. Unit does have a loose connection in the plug at the power supply that powers the CRT filament, although most of the time the connection is good as is. Probably an easy fix. Drive 1 works when in Drive 0 position, so perhaps there is an issue with the controller or cable for the :1 position.

Seller is located about 100 miles NW of San Antonio, TX a few miles off of I-10; and could meet in or around Kerrville, Texas if that's better.

Marcel Erz has reverse engineered the Model I ALPS keyboard PCB. He says

This project is a faithful reimplementation of the ALPS keyboard PCB of the iconic TRS-80 Model 1 computer. My revision, the E1, is designed to replicate the PCB design 1-to-1 of the original down to the traces. The entire project is available under the MIT license.

I have stumbled upon another disk format which TRSTools does not properly handle. I have tried to go through my old emails to find all the old reports, but many of them just sent disk images of which I no longer have records.

So ... to those who use TRSTools and TRSREAD, please tread carefully on the following DOS image types:

• MultiDOS double sided disks. TRSTools/TRSREAD will sometimes insert the side 2 data in the middle of side 1 files. I confirmed this by batch reading each disk double sided and then again as single sided, extracting the files, and comparing them. VDISK (by Miguel Dutra) extraction resulted in 100% identical crc's between those sets. TRSREAD had multiple differences, where the Double Sided disk read was corrupt.
• TRSDOS v2.3b disks.
• DosPlus 3.4A for the Model III.
• NEWDOS/80 images with damage on Track 1.
• TRSDOS v2.77D, particularly deleting files, as they may corrupt the image.
• TRSDOS 1.3 disks with extra data in a reserved area of the directory.

Right now, I have a slew of MultiDOS double sided disks (and CP/M double sided disks) where side 2 is inaccessible. The CP/M disks are entirely unusable; and that may be because they were made on a Model III with a Shuffleboard or because no tool exists to identify the geometry needed to mount them. The MultiDOS disks read (on a catweasel) as double-sided disks, but only Side 1 shows up in an emulator, and side 2 cannot be separately read as its own image.

Right now, you can build it yourself, although Jay is contemplating selling them in the future.

Vince Otten continues his series 'Software Tools in BASIC' with episode 3, 'Open For Business' and an article using ROM calls from TRSDOS. Quentin Barnes has updated the Catweasel Utilities to v4.10

New to this release are:

• Add -S option. This option allows the user to specify a minimum number of sectors per track and side. If that minimum is not reached during a read, it'll trigger a retry.
• Extend the -x and -X option argument syntax when specifying a track range to also allow giving sides.
• Add partial support for RX02 in dmk2jv3.

The -S is a feature that I find to be a necessary evil. Many disks with issues can erroneously report an end of track data before all the retries are finished, and CW2DMK would then decide "Oh, OK - then this track is 7 good sectors" when it really is "7 good, 11 bad" that was just mishandled. With this, you can make a second pass that FORCES CW2DMK to keep re-reading until it either gets 18 good sectors or the retry count expires.

• Add -pp/-ppx options to control printer window pop-up.
• Model I RS-232 sense switches (thanks to Tuc for hardware tests).
• Add loopback device to RS-232 choices (-r :loop on command line)
• Add -rx option to disable RS-232 on Model I,2,III,4,12,16.
• Semigraphics 6 modes will display alternate palette (Electric Crayon, MC-10, CoCo).
• Add "-im disksummary" and disksummary on drive exports to output a summary of drive structure just like the Disk Viewer window.

Quentin Barnes has updated the Catweasel Utilities to v4.10.1

New to this release are:

• Fix indefinite looping while guessing head stepping rate when encountering unusually formatted disks, often from copy protection.
• Fix bug with wraparound detection when the duplicate ID block gets cut off by the DMK buffer filling up. The fix is to stop decoding when the buffer fills up, so that we don't detect such a header in the first place.

A new upgrade to George and Peter Phillips's TRS-80 emulator. trs80gp (version 2.5.4) will be available shortly. Full details of all the options are available from their website. This really is THE best TRS-80 emulator on the planet. It even has, just for the U.K., Aculab Floppy Tape emulation. Just as 'in the day' but, of course, without any media problems! You can also use the upgraded version of Level 2 BASIC, "TWOHAF" (Level 2.5), using the AFT as well as ordinary cassette BASIC.

• Cassette now starts if inserted while CLOAD or SYSTEM in progress.
• Control of delay before cassette auto-save via -csd or Cassette -> Save menu.

Lawrence Kesteloot has updated his TRS-80 Tool with a new subcommand to the option to focus on bad sectors of a disk image.

The sectors command displays a table of the sectors in a floppy disk. The columns are the sectors and the rows are the tracks. For each sector a character is displayed with:

• - No sector.
• S Single-density sector.
• D Double-density sector.
• X Deleted sector.
• C CRC error (ID or data).
• ? Missing sector.

Use the --contents flag to also show the contents of the sectors.

The new --bad flag lists all sectors that are missing or that have a CRC error, as well as which file (if any) is on each bad sector. Can be combined with --contents to also show the contents of the bad sectors.

Quentin Barnes has released an update to his Greaseweazle software, now at version 0.0.1.beta.1. Supported is Windows 32 and 64 bit varieties, and Linux Aarch64, Arm7L and x86/x64.

IMHO, he is being very conservative with his numbering - the program works perfectly.

The Software Archive is unwieldy. Between SUPERZAP and BASIC, so many files were modified by the various users resulting a slightly different versions of otherwise identical files.

In attempting to weed through all these, I realized that I needed to be more descriptive in each filename, so that duplicates could be sussed out.

This entails running every piece of software in the archive, figuring out something that would quickly distinguish one version of, let's say, Star Trek or Othello or Poker, from another, and re-labeling the ZIP with that note. Then, seeing which files have the same label and running them again to see if they are identical and, if so, merging them into a single ZIP file instead of having multiple ZIP files. Then running them all again to get screen shots.

This exercise also allows for discovery of previously missing information, like an embedded author's name in one copy that was removed from another.

So that's what's going on. It is a drastic renaming and recommenting of the archive, but with a reduction in 'Author Unknown' and duplicate entries.

... and it also lets me program, something I don't otherwise do, in developing all the tools and batch files I need to make this jobs somewhat easier. VB6 still works fine under Windows 11, thank goodness!

Roger Murley / BYTESHiFT has a developed a recreation of the 26-1145 RS-232 interface board for the Model I

They are available for sale to those who wish to purchase one, or for those who like to build, the Gerbers, schematics, BOM, and KiCAD source files are available on GitHub.

Roger's design replicates the operation of the original board, ensuring compatibility with existing Model I software. Hardware-wise, he reports a few differences:

• SMT components are used wherever possible, to minimize cost
• Sense switch (DIP switch configuration) functionality is removed, so that the interface must be configured via software
• The TERM/COMM switch has been removed. The unit is configured in TERM (DTE) mode, and an external null-modem adapter must be used if operation as a DCE device is required.
• IC selection eliminated the need for +12/-12/-5 supply rails. +5V is the only supply needed

Mark, author of the popular TRS-80 text editor ED-IT, as well as the Utility Disks sold by Computer News 80, and many articles about the TRS-80 for multiple publications, passed away on April 20, 2025.

Over the weekend I licensed ABBYY Finereader 16 and ran all 102 issues of 80 Microcomputing through it. While I am surprised at some bugs that seem to have survived 16 iterations of the program to make themselves known almost immediately, it has allowed me to leverage the dtSearch indexing software to help augment the graphic parts of the archive, mostly adding missing blurbs and ads, although also helping to correct some author errors.

The workflow is that I do an archive search for program whose author is known but which doesn't have an ad. I then use dtSearch to try to see if they advertised in 80 Microcomputing. If so, I use GhostScript (command line) to extract to the page from the 80 Microcomputing to TIFF and edit accordingly.

While not perfect, it helped.

I have finished going through the OCR'd 80 Microcomputing magazines looking for advertisements which were missing from the search results. All in all, 483 more advertisements have been added.

I am sorry to announce that Matthew Reed has passed away. Matthew had done so much for the TRS-80 community, and for me personally, that this is a huge loss.

KiwiSinceBirth has updated his compilable source for the Model I. It is compilable with Telemark Assembler includes v1.2, v1.3, and EACA (selectable by #DEFINES). The following customizations are included:

• Enables the FreHD auto boot feature, i.e. the Auto boot ROM.
• Disable the use of memory mapped hardware at 37Exh, Floppy disk, Printer, etc. for machines where these peripherals are not needed (e.g. in a FreHD only system) and allows the use of the 2kb memory 3000h - 37FFh
• Set NMI (reset) as always perform a hard reset instead of returning to READY on non-DOS systems
• Disable Alpha character translation of letters A-Z,a-z to the values on range 00h to 1Fh. This is useful when a lower case mod is installed, but an alternate video driver has not been installed, or where the font rom on the machine has the alternate characters in the 00h 1Fh range (0471h)

TandyAssembly 2025 happened this weekend and they were lightning quick on getting some of the talks online.

Model I Version

Model III Version

Michael Wessel and Mark Pruden have developed X-MEM/80, a 512 KB paged memory expansion for the TRS-80 Model 1 and Model III.

According to them:

No permanent modifications are required for installation. The Model 1 version is entirely external (via expansion port edge connector), and the Model III version simply plugs into the existing Z80 socket on the Model III motherboard - the CPU needs to be relocated from the Model III motherboard onto the X-MEM/80 board, but it is already socketed. No motherboard modifications are required, but the RF shielding in the Model III needs to be removed.
Unlike previous memory expansions for the Model I (i.e., SuperMem), this is a minimally invasive memory expansion that does not require any soldering for installlation.
X-MMEM/80 is partially SuperMem compatible, as it allows to "bank" the upper 32 KBs (address range from 0x8000 to 0xFFFF) with the memory on the card.
A jumper allows configuration in two different modes - SuperMem and X-MEM/80 modes:

So far about 200 pages have been converted to the newer format, with about 100 more to go. Claude.ai has now instituted not only hourly caps but weekly caps, so this is very slow going.

Between Claude AI and Gemini Pro (but definitely not Gemini Flash), the web site has been updated to new CSS. I have moved prior news into the "old news" pages because WordPress would require me to update each news item individually otherwise.

There might be broken CSS when I kill the old CSS. I still have work to do though. Since AI sessions can only be so long, each new session required me to feed in the CSS to date, and I instructed it to re-use as much CSS as it could. Despite that, over 650 new CSS definitions were created; so much for site consistency.

Well, the first pass of the AI conversion did an OK job, even if it took about a month due of token limits. The problem is that it created 1500 classes because of the number of sessions that had to be used. Instead of it being able to consistently review pages and apply consistent code, even when instructed to re-use old code, it didn't do a great job.

So I need to make another pass. I have developed, with AI's help, three main types of code sections - general, columnar, and images. As I move page to page, I have those codes updated as needed. This should bring consistency to the site.

Some of the things about the new design that I absolutely love, is that a simple CSS class added to a catalog entry, email address, or clickable image, just adds a note telling you what you can do with that. This is something I would have used JQUERY for in the past, but CSS3 is pretty awesome! Examples are the little caption on the pictures below; automatically added by CSS.

Anyway, the AI page pass left me with 1500+ CSS entries, and those need to get culled. Well, most of them. It turns out that the new search pages require 450 CSS entries! They are kind of beautiful, so I'm going to leave those alone.

For the rest of the pages, I had Gemini write some Visual BASIC Code to parse every html file, extract every class used, and come up with a display that would show me the class, the code, and the files which use it. I also had to have it let me know about dependencies after a particularly disasterous attempt to globally update the code.

This is a sample of the output.

Here, there is a class used by only 1 page. In this case, it's because its a typo. But putting that aside, it is my clue as to the next page to edit. I then go through and update the page to use the new classes.

Once that page (or pages) are done, I use WildEdit to search the entire tree for the class.

If it shows no changes made, then I can delete the CSS.

I also had a button prepared that would output the "good" and "bad" css. If I get tired of editing specific pages, but still want to make progress, I use WildEdit to find entries that are on the "bad" page. If there are no results, I can just strike that CSS entry.

So that's what's going on now ....

But as of this point, v1 CSS is pretty much gone, so if you see a page (or table) that is broken, let me know!

A site visitor (and very frequent contributor) has multiple Model I components that he would like to give away by local pickup only in the Norfolk, Nebraska area.

He lists:

KiwiSinceBirth has released v2.0a of his redesigned Model I motherboard. He reports the following changes:

This project is an upgraded / evolved TRS-80 Model 1 main board replacement. It was designed to provide a reliable, compact, and modern replacement, removing some limitations of the original 1970's product, while still remaining faithful to the original technology (i.e. no emulation)

v2.0a provides significant improvements in video, not only does it use dual port RAM for snow free video, but it changes the video sync generation circuit bringing back the picture adjustment controls not present in V1. Also supported is software switchable fonts, for alternate languages or other graphics. Other major features added to the board include an audio amplifier for a small speaker (which can be mounted on the board), Alpha Joystick port compatible with most software, and ability to mount a modern clock oscillator. Have added about 10 new config jumpers/settings in support of new features. V1 is still fully supported including a separate build guide. Not forgetting Supermem bank RAM and internal FreHD

When Matthew Reed passed, and asked me to host his sites, he gave me wordpress pages converted to HTML. That was the way to do it, since WordPress works off of a bunch of PHP code on the back and and a large database - not easily movable.

The process of making that HTML usable, though, was challenging; particularly since the HTML was just a frozen moment-in-time of the WordPress, with all the stats bars ('most read articles', 'associated articles', etc) locked in place, and all pointing to directories instead of .html files.

Since we are all mortal, I thought about that and decided to convert TRS-80 away from WordPress. It will make maintaining site much easier, for sure.

The most significant improvement is in terms of screen width - no longer wedged into 800 pixels for no valid reason. The 3 search page results now also span the width, making things a lot less crushed. On the mobile side, those pages scroll, and most of the HTML seems to be working great on the smaller screens. Also, "Click to Enlarge", "Click to Download", and "Click to Email" are all inserted by CSS automatically so you know what clicking on something might afford.

If you come up with any 404 errors, or any really-off formatting, or have any usable suggestions, please let me know.

A new page for all available TRS-80 upgrades and add-ons as been added. The various associated information is still present wherever it is on the site, but this page attempts to consolidate all of the offerings. If there is any missing or incorrect information, please let me know. You can see the new page.

Also, I have updated the TRSDOS v1.3 Zaps page to include explanations as to what each patch does along with jumps into the various disassemblies.

Today was the first time I ran into what Ian has run into for a while ... unreadable Radio Shack brand disks. I previously had good luck with them, but today I received two different sets of disks to read. One was Radio Shack only and one was Radio Shack and Storage Media.

With almost no exceptions, I was unable to read the Radio Shack disks from both sets. I had thought a bunch of Storage Media disks were also bad, but upon trying to second set, it dawned on me to try reading without introducing any Radio Shack disks into the process. Once I did that, all Storage Media disks read without issue.

I wonder if we have hit some sort of magic timeframe whereby Radio Shacks are now no longer viable. I mean, its been over 40 years and its a miracle that any disks can be read ... but perhaps Radio Shack disks are now past their time?

I think the site redesign is now done. Some pages have had major rewrites (all thanks to AI) like the Missing Software page, and the search pages, but by this point all pages are using consistent CSS which has been minimized.

While I was at it, I tried to augment the magazine pages to all include the table of contents (where they existed).

And special thanks to Ven Reddy who pointed out that when I moved off of WordPress I lost the Site Search function. I personally consider the site too unwieldy and too hard to find anything, and I wrote it - so I can imagine what everyone else goes through. So the loss of site search was a big loss. If anyone has any better ideas as to how to organize the navigation or make it easier to find subpages and content, please let me know.

In other updates, I have been working on the disassembly pages trying to add more information to the input/output portions. Right now it's in the form of adding bit tables to show all the options and explanations within each comment. Also, as of last night, the disassemblies are "mobile friendly".

The Easter Egg page page has been updated with a reverse engineering of Randy Cook's secret screen from TRSDOS v2.x. Thanks to George Philips and absolutely no thanks to Gemini who halucinated an elaborate routine that didn't exist!

Amardeep Chana has written up step-by-step instructions to modify a Model I to run much cooler and more reliably. It involves modifying the system to no longer need the +/-12V to power the RAM, focusing solely on 5V.

The commented/explained disassembly of BACKUP/CMD and TAPEDISK/CMD from Model I TRSDOS v2.3 haves been added.

NEWDOS/80 v2.0 for the Model I has been disassembled, with most of the heavy lifting done by Claude AI, with help from Gemini and Grok. They all definitely have their strengths and weakenesses.

KiwiSinceBirth has posted updates to his compilable source file for the Model I/III ROM

He has a traditional Model I Level 2 BASIC ROM and Model III Level 2 BASIC ROM which have comments and which can be compiled into a workable ROM. His source differs from a standard disassembly in the following ways

• Replaced all disassembler generated labels with meaningful labels.
• Ensured all jumps (JR and JP) reference valid code labels.
• Replaced all 3xxxH hardware references with .EQU definitions.
• Replaced all 4xxxH buffer references with .EQU definitions.
• Replaced all xxH byte references with appropriate decimal or ascii values, and/or .EQU definitions.
• Replaced all generated op-code with Byte .DB .DW definitions for DataTables/Text/Constants/Etc
• Added code documentation from various sources at the code block / function level.
• Replaced incorrect op-codes, where Better Else "Trick" was used.

He has also developed an enhanced ROM for both machines which have slightly broken compatibility, but which otherwise include new support, features, and some bug fixes

To make room for all this, cassette support has been removed.

Additionally, you can now download pre-built binary images for most common configurations. There are 16 variants. Hr did this to make it easier to use, no assembly required, no defines to understand, just choose the ROM that makes sense. It also means the vanilla configurations can be compared against official roms, to check for binary compatibility. This build process is automated by GITHub anytime a change is made, it will assemble and publish a new release.

CDD/CMD v2.0.0 is a little utilty to use with the DiskDisk utility from MISOSYS that allows us to emulate the MS-DOS CD command. I wanted to be able to change DiskDisks as easy as I change subdirectories on MS-DOS.
Usage: CDD [:dn] DDfilespec
Where DDfilespec is the name of the DiskDISK file you want to mount. and :dn is an optional drive number you want to use for that file. The default is :4.

RMD/CMD v2.0.0 allows for the DISABLE to disable not just a DiskDISK mounted at :4, but the user is now free to disable a DiskDISK no matter which drive it is mounted to.
Usage: RMD [:dn]

• Enabled a very simple "lazy load" on some graphic heavy page, including this one, to make them load faster

Lawrence Kesteloot has released an updated copy of his trs80tools, now new version 2.8.6.

I don't know every change, but I know what he has been helping me with - trying to find a PC based TRS-80 disassembler that can come up with comparable output to a TRS-80 based one. In this regard his changes were:

1. Handle .SYS files that are raw dumps of floppy boot sectors. These work with the info, hexdump, and disasm commands.
2. Add --full and --data-comment flags to the disasm command.

The updated version can diassemble SYS files, including those without standard CMD file markers (like BOOT/SYS), and with the right command line options, can produce a listing file just like DISASSEM/CMD (with the address, hex, op code, and ascii in fixed columns).

And for those who want this kind of output there are a LOT of flags to override default behavior. I used

• Yesterday the Disk Request Form came under really heavy attack and I received hundreds and hundreds of fake forms. The interesting part was that the attackers had a slight misconfiguration, and they were bleeding code into the fields. So I provided Gemini with my html/cgi as well as all their code. Gemini was able to determine what software they were using and updated the cgi accordingly. At least it stopped until the next time.
• Claude usage caps are infuriating. I am trying to go through VTOS very carefully and the low caps are making this take a very very long time.

Although I keep hitting the CLAUDE.AI caps very quickly, I am trying to progress with the VTOS v4.0.2 disassembly. Their way-too-tight caps just make it slow going.

I want to give a special shout out to Tim Mann and to Lawyrence Kesteloot, both of whom have been extremely helpful in navigating SYS6/SYS. This system file is in an ISAM/PDS format,meaning that it is a bunch of overlapping routines all jammed into one file, and special code is used to point to a specific byte in the file and say 'start running here'. Traditional disassembly simply won't work.

Tim has been extremely helpful in explaining/helping with the ISAM/PDS structure and answering questions as they came up.

Lawrence updated his trs-80tool a few times to assist, most recently to allow for file extraction from disks and to understand the additional codes inside a PDS sys file to permit disassembly. Before he did this, I failed 4 times in trying to disassemble the file.

• v2.8.8 - Added --system flag to the convert command to extract system files from floppies. Updated so that disasm command understands LDOS-style PDS files for SYS6.SYS and SYS7.SYS, disassembling each overlay separately.
• v2.8.7 - Disassemble VTOS .SYS files better by handling the CMD block type 0x10 (yanked load block) like 0x01 (data).

Tim Mann is still at it on his VTOS work. A lot of online documentation (and the source material it is based on) had talked about Tim Mann figuring out, back in the day, how to create a "Duplicator Disk", which just sat and polled floppy drives and made a "Master Disk" (the one which was sold to the public) whenever it found a diskette. None of those sources ever documented how. Tim has now re-figured that out, and kindly provided one based on the original image. A link to that has been added to the VTOS page. He also noted that the VTOS v3.0.1 image zip file, which contained 5 different VTOS v3.0.1 DMK's, had two which were badly hacked. Those two have been removed and the zip file updated. Thank you again, Tim, for not only your work here, but your work over the decades for the TRS-80!

The first, which I am 2/3 of the way through, is updating the TRSDOS v1.3 disassembly pages to merge in the official Frank Durda source code labels and comments. This is tough going because of misformed pages to begin with. It also uses a ton of credits because I have to feed in a disassembly, the HTML (which is about 500MB each), and all of Frank's source and dependencies.

The second, is to re-OCR the documents. There are currently 7,963 zips in the 'publications' folder. The process uses cURL to upload the PDF to the Mistral API and retrieve a unique file ID, which is then passed to a PowerShell script to trigger the OCR model and generate a text sidecar, which is then used by OCRmyPDF to inject a searchable text layer back into the original document. During this final assembly, Tesseract performs a local OCR pass to handle any missed coordinates and refine text placement, while Ghostscript acts as the rendering engine to optimize the PDF's internal structure and compress the file for archival storage. Mistral is utilized because it employs the new Vision-Language Model (VLM) that is better than the basic pattern-matching of legacy tools by using deep contextual understanding to accurately "read" and reconstruct text even through the heavy noise, dot-matrix distortion, and ink-bleed common older publications. It is possible that the JSON can be used for indexing the archive's full-text search engine or programmatically extracting metadata from the magazines.

• Thanks to a program writing by Gemini, I have gotten JSON OCR from Mistral for all 7,963 zips in the 'publications' folder, although a few PDF's had to be regenerated. I have looked at the output, and it is by no means perfect, but it is orders of magnitude better than what was there from either AABBYY Finereader or Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  UPDATE: At this point, I have re-uploaded all downloadable PDF's and every one of them should have the .json and sidecar.txt in it. I am, however, starting the "Phase 2" of creating PDF's with the Mistral OCR replacing the existing OCR, and the files will be re-uploaded once that occurs.

• Downloads for Level 1 programs have been fixed, thanks to Quentin pointing out that they were not functioning.
• The TRSDOS v1.3 disassembly re-do project is winding down. All 15 SYS files have been reprocessed against Frank Durda's source file. I plan on doing BASIC/CMD as well to finish up the set once the credits refresh. I also realized that XFERSYS was never disassembled, so that will be on the to-do list as well. I wish all the background information and files required to do these didn't use up so many credits.
